Stephen has worked as a Respiratory Specialist since 2001, specialising in Asthma and COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). He ran clinics in his own pharmacy, and at GP surgeries across Kent and Medway, before moving his clinical practice to Essex in November 2014.
He currently works in General Practice four days a week, seeing around 2,500 patients a year at four different surgeries in Mid Essex CCG. Amongst other things, he performs lung function tests, checks their Oxygen saturation and breathlessness, advises them on smoking cessation, and ensures that they are on the most appropriate medication for their condition.
Stephen trained as an Allergy Specialist with Allergy UK, the national allergy foundation, in 2008. In the nine years since, Stephen has helped hundreds of patients with allergies and intolerances.
Many patients who were previously diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) and other inflammatory bowel disorders are now symptom-free as the direct result of Stephen’s support.
When Stephen opened Pierremont Pharmacy in 2007, he also developed a unique weight management programme. Since then, he has helped hundreds of patients to lose weight in a healthy, sustainable way, focusing on clinical principles as laid out by the British Heart Foundation.
Stephen has also written a book about his weight management programme, "Diets Don’t Work", which when published will help patients all over the world to access his pioneering work in this field.
A few years ago, Stephen was finding it increasingly difficult to arrange for patients to have their ears syringed. Many local surgeries had stopped providing the service for one reason or another. Even where the service was available, patients often had to wait many weeks to see the practice nurse. His solution? Stephen trained himself, and now offers the service from his pharmacy in Margate!
Patients are reminded that they need to use a softening ear drop for five to seven days beforehand to facilitate the removal of the ear wax. Stephen recommends the use of Sodium Bicarbonate ear drops (rather than any of the other proprietary brands or olive oil) and patients are advised to use three to four drops in each ear, morning and evening, for a period of five to seven days before their allotted appointment.
Men typically die five years earlier than women in the UK, and this is not about genetics! In other parts of the world, men actually outlive women. The most common reason is because men are incredibly bad at looking after their own health! When faced with an illness or worsening condition, men tend to "bury their heads in the sand" and hope the problem goes away. By the time they eventually seek medical attention, it is often too late.
For this reason, Stephen has designed this service, and recommends that men over the age of 55 book in for an "annual MOT" in the same way that they would book their cars in for a service. In the 30 minute appointment, he checks their blood pressure and cholesterol level, weighs and measures them, and gives them any relevant advice on diet, exercise, weight loss and lifestyle factors which may affect their long-term health.
Over the years, Stephen has developed various other clinical specialisms, and currently runs clinics in four GP practices in Essex for patients with coronary heart disease, high blood pressure and diabetes amongst other things.
He was part of the Dermatology Working Group at the Department of Health, which was responsible for re-writing Dermatology guidelines for practitioners in 2010, and also supports patients with travel health requirements, gout and a host of other conditions.
